The Gear That Protects Those Who Protect Us

August 4, 2022

When it comes to the emergency equipment firefighters wear on the scene of a blaze or accident, safety and comfort are top priorities. From head to toe, each piece of specially designed gear provides the protection needed to battle heat and contaminants, and ensure the highest level of safety.

Here’s a look at what today’s firefighters wear when they answer the call.

Modern firefighting helmets feature reflectors for safety, a badge number for identification, a powerful light and a face shield. A hood is worn underneath to add an additional layer of protection from heat and contaminants.

A self-contained breathing apparatus, mask, and regulator attached to a compressed air tank deliver 45 minutes of reliable air in smokey environments. This system includes a personal safety alert that indicates the amount of air used and remaining, and a mayday button that can be activated if a firefighter is in need of assistance.

A powerful flashlight provides illumination both to help firefighters see and to help them be seen by others.

The firefighter’s bunker coat is made of special material that repels water and heat on the outside, but retains heat inside through a series of unique layers. Reflective stripes on the arms, chest and bottom provide greater visibly to others, while the back features a rescue harness to pull immobile firefighters to safety.

Hands are protected by leather gloves that offer heat resistance, while maintaining the dexterity needed to open doors and handle emergency equipment.

Bunker pants feature the same material as the jacket – repelling water and protecting from outside heat sources, while keeping heat in. Also like the jacket, bunker pants feature reflective stripes, as well as knee pads and oversized pockets to hold necessary items.

Heavy-duty boots protect firefighter’s feet. Made of rubber or leather, these heavy-duty boots are reinforced with steel for long wear and added protection.

All together, firefighter’s turnout gear can cost upwards of $10,000 or more.
