Fighting Fire Is Only Part Of The Job

November 3, 2021

If you’ve ever driven past an automobile accident and wondered why you often see firemen and fire rescue vehicles with equipment on the scene, there are actually a number of very important reasons for these skilled professionals to answer the call and rush to the scene along with state troopers, police and other first responders.

In 2020, even with so many limiting their travel activities due to COVID 19, the National Safety Council reported that more than 42,000 people died and an estimated 4.8 million were seriously injured in automobile and motorcycle crashes nationwide.

When accidents like these occur, the 911 response dispatch from a nearby fire station or stations typically consists of EMS units, a rescue unit and, if necessary, a ladder company. More rescue units may be dispatched in situations where a person is trapped in or under a vehicle, or when multiple vehicles are involved. From the minute they arrive on the scene, firefighters are busy evaluating the situation – identifying victims and the severity of injuries, noting potential hazards such as gasoline leaks or the presence of other dangerous materials, checking for damage to buildings or structures that may pose additional threats, managing the scene, controlling traffic, providing medical care, and working to minimize any further accidents or dangers to responders, victims, or other travelers.

Firefighters are also trained in the use of specialized hydraulic and electrical equipment specifically designed to extract victims trapped in or under cars quickly and safely. These powerful, life-saving tools include spreaders, extension rams, and cutters or shears – often referred to as jaws of life.

Thankfully for motorists everywhere, firefighters are trained to do much more than skillfully fight fires. When highway and roadway accidents happen, you’ll see these highly trained professionals on the scene, providing critical medical attention, support and assistance that can be the difference between life and death for victims, and ensuring an important level of protection for other travelers.
